It is often the case where so-called ‘natural supplements’ are derided as being fit for ‘hippies’ and alternative health gurus only. While sellers of products such as CBD capsules can’t even call their items ‘supplements,’ the cannabinoid does, unofficially, fall into the alternative health category.
As such, it is perhaps surprising to discover a strong link between MMA and CBD oil. A growing number of fighters use the cannabinoid. Many of them probably did it in the shadows for a long time as it wasn’t legal. However, the WADA removed the cannabinoid from its list of banned substances in recent times.
In this article, we look at four big-name MMA fighters that use CBD. First, let’s take a brief look at why CBD oil and MMA are potentially a good mix.
MMA Is an Incredibly Demanding Vocation – CBD Could Help
Professional fighters usually begin with an early morning run before breakfast. Then, they have an extremely intense training session, followed by another in the afternoon. Training involves sparring, strength and conditioning, and a focus on a particular skill such as wrestling or grappling.
Rest and recovery are essential. If an MMA fighter doesn’t do this adequately, he/she will quickly burn out and be more susceptible to injuries. Sleep is of pivotal importance to any fighter, and it is here where CBD could help MMA fighters.
A study published in Current Psychiatry Reports in April 2017 looked at the effect of cannabinoids on sleep. It found that CBD could improve sleep amongst patients with chronic pain. There is also evidence that the cannabinoid could reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.
Another primary consideration is the level of pain faced by fighters. Those who watched Conor McGregor’s Notorious documentary will remember the various injuries the multiple-time champion endured. A study published in the European Journal of Rheumatology in September 2017 explored how the ECS is relevant in pain and inflammation. It went into great detail on how cannabidiol could help fight both issues.
When you explore other possible benefits, it becomes easier to understand the link between MMA and CBD oil. Further potential benefits include:
- Neuroprotective effects.
- Faster recovery.
- Reduced reliance on painkillers and other medications.
- Increased energy and focus.
Now, without further ado, let’s look at four of the dozens of CBD oil taking MMA fighters.
1 – Nate Diaz
In some ways, Diaz is the ‘poster-child’ for MMA and CBD oil use. Back in 2016, he openly smoked a CBD vape pen in a post-fight interview. This action led to an enormous level of attention because many viewers thought he was using marijuana. At the time, CBD was still on the WADA list of banned substances.
Most people expected Diaz to receive a ban, but he escaped. One possible reason was that he was deemed exempt since he used the cannabinoid after the fight was over. His brother, Nick, also a fighter, received a five-year ban from the UFC in 2015 for using cannabis!
2 – Yair Rodriguez
‘El Pantera’ is an exciting fighter and first gained prominence in 2014 after winning a Latin American version of The Ultimate Fighter. Rodriguez has won many Fighter of the Night honors and is widely regarded as one of the hardest hitters in his weight class.
Like Diaz, he is very open about his use of CBD and has even written about it on a website called CBDMD. He said he was introduced to the cannabinoid by a friend who claimed it was useful for anxiety and pain. According to Rodriguez, his favorite products are CBD oils and creams.
3 – Joe Schilling
Also known as ‘Stitch Me Up,’ Schilling is a man used to sorting out issues using his fists and legs. One story suggests that he decided to become a professional fighter after beating up an adult in a bar fight when Schilling was just 17 years old. As his nickname suggests, he is a man that has no problems taking a few blows to get in a few.
In one interview, Schilling claimed that CBD helped his father defeat cancer. It seems likely that he uses the CBD to improve his recovery from yet another hard bout.
4 – Jon ‘The Bones’ Jones
Widely regarded as one of the all-time great MMA fighters, Jones is a two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and made 11 defenses of his title overall. His only defeat in 28 contests came via a DQ after the illegal use of elbows.
Jones’ only other blemish is a No Contest after he tested positive for turinabol after a KO win over Daniel Cormier. Although he has used many drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, Jones is also a known user of CBD.
If you have issues with pain, anxiety, or struggle to recover after hard exertion, perhaps you could take a leaf out of the book of the fighters above. If the link between MMA and CBD oil fascinates you, check out top-rated brands like Premium Jane to learn more about the compound.
