Anderson Silva Fails More Tests; Additional Substances Found

The bad news and tarnishing of Anderson Silva’s legacy continues.

Today, Silva’s post fight test results administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the former UFC middleweight champion tested positive for Oxazepam, Temazepam, and Drostanalone, which was caught in Silva’s out of competition test back on January 9th.

Oxazepam and Temazepam are Benzodiazepines that are usually prescribed as a sedative or to relieve anxiety. They are a depressant, which means they help slow the body’s system down and have sleep inducing components.  He was also tested the day of the fight (before the fight) and tested positive once again for drostanolone, a performance enhancing drug.

Silva (34-6) originally failed his first test on Jan. 9, for Drostanalone and Androstane. He would later submit a sample on the 19th of January which came in clean, and finally, a third test on the 31st which resulted in a failed test.

Silva was facing a possible nine-month suspension for his initial positive results, Bob Bennett, NSAC executive director, told media outlets that it is unknown if the commission will increase the length of Silva’s punishment for additional failed tests.

The NSAC traditionally hands out temporary suspensions pending a more formal hearing at a subsequent meeting. The date for the commission’s next meeting hasn’t been set, but Nevada Deputy Attorney General Chris Eccles assured the fighters and their reps that they’ve be given proper time to prepare.

Nick Diaz (26-10) failed his pre-fight test for marijuana metabolites, however, tested clean for all other banned substances. Silva and Diaz’s bout has not been overturned to a “no contest” as of yet, this will most likely occur during the disciplinary hearing.
