B.J. Penn injured; comeback delayed once again

On again, off again.  On again, off again.  That has been the story of B.J. Penn’s return to mixed martial arts action in 2016.

The UFC Hall of Famer and former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion was set to return next weekend, October 15 against Ricardo Lamas in the main event at UFC Fight Night 97.  Penn’s return is now on hold once again after pulling out of the fight due to injury.

Penn has not competed in mixed martial arts since his third loss to Frankie Edgar in 2014.

Earlier this year there was a legal issue that kept Penn from returning from action even after he had initially announced his return.  Penn was named in an alleged sexual assault that was investigated by police.  No wrongdoing came out of the investigation and he was once again booked for a fight.

Then the fighter was placed on a six-month suspension by USADA for admitting to IV use prior to a scheduled fight.

The injury marks the third setback for Penn’s anticipated return to action this year.

No replacement for the Lamas fight has been found as of yet.
