Bellator 131 Results – Brooks TKO’s Chandler, Ortiz Wins By Split Decision

Bellator 131 took place at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California, November 15, 2014.

The card was headlined by two legendary light heavyweight fighters looking to settle a score. Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonner tried to squash their drama of family insults and espionage inside the cage tonight, but the victory for Ortiz didn’t appear to satisfy his disdain for Bonner.

The co-main event was for the lightweight world title between Interim Champion Will Brooks and Michael Chandler. Chandler intended on regaining his weight class supremacy by revenging his split decision loss to Brooks in his last bout on the Bellator Pay-Per-View and wrapping the belt around his waist. Brooks had different plans as he appeared to follow his game plan to a successful finish and wrapped the lightweight belt around his waist.

“King Mo” climbed into the cage tonight with Joe Vedepo. The two fighters battled at light heavyweight in a featured fight. Muhammad Lawal powered through his opponent with intentions to get back on track to title contentions. Vedepo had a large task at hand in tonight’s match-up with King Mo as he bumped up a weight class to fight Lawal.

Main Card (9PM EST/8PM CST on Spike) * – Light Weight Title Fight

Tito Ortiz def. Stephan Bonner (Split Decision, 30-27, 30-27, 28-29)

After fifteen minutes of fighting, Ortiz managed to pull out a split decision. Ortiz secured a few takedowns throughout each round that Bonner escaped bringing the fight back to their feet. Both fighters stood toe-to-toe swinging at each other in hopes to take the others head off.

*Will Brooks def. Michael Chandler (TKO, Round 4 at 3;48) Brooks New Lightweight Champion.

After a tough round to score, the first round ended with both fighters showing a tremendous amount if respect for each other as neither over exerted themselves. Chandler earned a takedown in the round and both fighters used leg kicks and solid jabs to move around the cage.

The second round was a back and forth action between the two athletes. Chandler landed a few solid shots and nearly finished the fight with a standing guillotine. Brooks earned a takedown and land several tough shots at the end of the round.

In the third round of action chandler looked exhausted. He continually looked for a takedown he couldn’t finish. Throughout the round Brooks delivered a number of knees to Chandler. Brooks is most likely up two round to one on Chandler.

The fourth round Brooks landed a solid power shot that took all sense away from Chandler. Chandler, unsure where he was, appeared to wave off the fight and took a couple more punches to the face before the referee stepped in-between the fighters calling the bout.  Brooks is the new lightweight Champion.

Joe Schilling def. Melvin Manhoef (KO, Round 2, :32)

After taking an assault  in the first round, Schilling survived the round to come back in the second round. The two fighters danced around for only a few seconds before Manhoef pressured and Schilling responded with an attack of his own. Manhoef caught Schilling with a power right hook, which Schilling eat for breakfast and fed Manhoef a right and left shot that knocked out his opponent before he hit the canvas.

Mike Richman def. Nam Phan (KO, Round 1 at :46)

‘King Mo’ Muhammad Lawal def. Joe Vedepo (TKO, Round 3 at :39)

King Mo and Vedepo started off the main card on Spike TV with a quick start. Vedepo came out aggressive and King Mo used his size taking down Vedepo. The NCAA national champion pressured his smaller opponent on the canvas with numerous heavy strikes. Lawal used a consistent pace of punches through the first round. At about one minute remaining, Vedepo’s face showed significant damage. After Vedepo reached his feet with King Mo draped over his back, King Mo slammed Vedepo back to the mat as the round ends.

The second round started very similar as Vedepo came out wild and brought to the mat by a takedown. Vedepo layed on his back against the cage with no answer for King Mo. Vedepo escaped to his feet with a swollen face.  Another takedown placed Vedepo on his back with King Mo in full guard. The second round finished with the much larger Muhammad Lawal on top punishing his opponent.

King Mo finally finished Vedepo with a TKO by a right hand that took his legs away in the third round.
