Bellator 153 Results: Koreshkov Pummels Henderson For Five

Bellator 153 Results:  Koreshkov vs Henderson

Bellator 153 took place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut with preliminary bouts streaming here on MyMMANews.com and the main card on Spike.  MyMMANews.com was on location and has your official Bellator 153 results.  Mixed martial arts legends Wanderlei Silva and Royce Gracie did a meet and greet with fans before the event and then sat cageside for all the action.

Bellator paid tribute to Prince who passed away yesterday by opening up the main show on Spike with his hit, 1999.

Headlined by a welterweight world title bout between Andrey “Spartan” Koreshkov (18-1) and Benson “Smooth” Henderson (23-5), the main card was primed to entertain.

For the first two minutes the champion and the challenger felt each other out with jabs.  It was the champion, Koreshkov, who changed the momentum with a big head kick.  From there Koreshkov kept attacking the head and body of Henderson with vicious kicks.  Koreshkov ended the first round with a huge flying knee to the face of Henderson.  Somehow Hendo managed to hang on and make it to the second round.

The former UFC lightweight champion continues to get dominated and mauled in the second round by the Bellator champ.  Henderson kept working for the takedown but the champion would not allow it.  Henderson could be down two rounds to none.

In the third round a “Let’s go Benson” chant starts but there is nothing the crowd can do.  He continues to get pummeled and punished by Koreshkov.  The champion peppers the challenger’s body with huge knees and punches while Henderson is down.  Koreshkov lands a huge spinning heel kick to the head of Henderson to end the third round.

The fourth round was more of the first three, but Henderson is showing more life, pressing the champion up against the cage.  The challenger does not get much done in the way of hurting Koreshkov.  Henderson now has his back up against the cage and Koreshkov drops him with a big right hand.  He applies a guillotine choke but Henderson scoots out.  They end the fourth round on their feet.

A good show of sportsmanship is on display before the start of the fifth and final round as the two fighters embrace in the center of the cage.  Henderson is starting to show more signs of life, hanging in the fight but again Koreshkov is working the head and body of the challenger, clearly the smaller man in the fight.  Henderson continues to get punished and the fight ends going to a decision in favor of the champion.

In addition, “Bellator 153: Henderson vs. Koreshkov” also featured Brennan Ward (13-3) going to battle against “Cyborg” Santos (20-16) and Patricio “Pitbull” Friere (24-3) versus Henry Corrales (12-2).

For whatever the reason, Pitbull could not win over the fans tonight in Uncasville.  No matter how hard he came at Corrales the fans kept booing the former champion.  They just were not behind him during the fight, until….. he pounced on Corrales and submitted him with a guillotine choke in the second round.  Pitbull is the winningest fighter in Bellator history.

Ward vs Santos was easily the biggest pop of the night as Santos got the boos and the hometown favorite, Ward earned the cheers and adornment of fans.  The problem however for Ward was that he was going up against a submission master and was submitted just as quickly as the fight started.  Ward was submitted via heel hook at 30 seconds into the first round.

Brent Primus (6-0) and Gleristone Santos “Toninho Furia” (27-5) was a fun back and forth standup battle.  Primus kept pushing the face forward working for takedowns and at one point a spinning back kick.  The two fighters then traded bombs back and forth for the remainder of the second round.  Fans were really enjoying this fight.  In the third round the fighters were clubbing each other with everything they had, fans were on their feet, waiting for more.  In the end, it would go to the judges for a decision.

The opening bout on the main card on Spike TV featured 28-year-old welterweight star Michael “Venom” Page (9-0), putting his unblemished record on the line against Jeremie Holloway (7-1). Page might have set a new record as he floored Holloway with a right hand punch in about half a second’s time.  Holloway immediately bounced back up and continued to fight but was significantly stunned.  The two battled back and forth before it went to the ground again and Venom grabbed hold of Holloway’s ankle and it appeared as if something snapped in the foot of Holloway.  He winced in pain and physicians immediately rushed into to care of the wounded and hurt Jeremie Holloway.

It seems that Venon already has his next fight set as it was announced that he will be in London for Bellator 158.  Story here.

Matt Bessette vs Keith Richardson was the final bout on the early preliminary card and while Bessette was frustrated early in the first round with the tactics of his opponent, he surely switched things up in the second.  Bessette delivered a mouse (hematoma) to the right eye of Richardson and split open the left.  Blood oozed from Richardson’s face down to his chest and referee Big John McCarthy asked for a cageside physician to inspect the fighter.  The fight was waived off with Bessette earning the victory.

Chris Honeycutt vs Matt Secor turned out to be the exact opposite of what everyone expected.  Honeycutt took Secor down in each round and consistently worked ground and pound while Secor would work defensively to get to his feet, get frustrated, and taken back down.  The crowd was behind Secor but Honeycutt used the takedowns to his advantage to work over the judges’ scorecards.

The opening preliminary bout of the evening featured former World Series of Fighting lightweight title contender, Rich Patishnock vs. Djamil Chan.  Patishnock was doing well with takedowns and ground and pound until he made a mistake attempting to sink in a guillotine choke and Chan capitalized, reversed, and the fight returned to the feet.  Within seconds from there, Patishnock was laid out by a series of punches, hit his head off the canvas, and Chan followed up with a big right.  The fight was called to a stop after a brutal knockout and medical professionals entered to the cage to take care of the fighter.  Patishnock laid on the canvas for what seemed like minutes, but eventually left on his own accord.
