Bellator 172 results: Josh Thomson vs. Patricky Freire

Bellator 172 was to feature the return of legendary mixed martial arts heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko taking on Matt Mitrione in the evening’s main event.  That main event was cancelled just hours before start time as Mitrione has fallen ill.  Story here.

Bellator 172 is now headlined by Josh Thomson vs. Patricky Freire.

The event takes place at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

Thomson came into his hometown looking to earn the spot as the number one contender to the lightweight title.  He was rocked early in the first round but told his corner in between stances that it was just a trip.  Then in the second, he is rocked again and as he made his way to his feet, he is put down with an uppercut.

After Russian prospect Anatoly Tokov defeated Francisco France via TKO, Fedor was able to speak about the main event cancellation.  He stated that the fight will happen but later down the road after Matt is healthy again.

In the second fight on the main card, a war between female combatants, Veta Arteaga and Brooke Mayo saw the ladies win a round a piece before severe swelling developed over the eye of Mayo in the third.  Upon the advice of a ringside physician the fight was stopped.  It was painful to watch Mayo plead with officials stating “I can see, I can see,” over and over again.

Josh Koscheck finally made his Bellator MMA debut going up against newcomer Mauricio Alonso.  The last time Koscheck fought was 700 days ago,  (1 year, 10 months, 28 days).  It was a short night for the returning Koscheck as he was defeated via strikes in the first round.
