BREAKING NEWS: Mixed Martial Arts Legalized In New York

The New York State Senate approved the legalization of mixed martial arts by a 48-14 vote on February 29.  Today, the Assembly’s tourism committee voted 15-5 in favor; the codes committee 16-5; and the ways and means committee 25-7, officially legalizing the sport in the Empire State.

New York State Govenor Andrew Cuomo will be next to see and sign the bill. From there, the New York State Athletic Commission has 120 days to adopt guidelines.

This is a major breakthrough for the sport of mixed martial arts as for the last seven years in a row the State Senate passed bills legalizing the sport however legislation never got to the floor for a vote in the Assembly.

New York is the last of all 50 states to adopt the sport legally.

With Madison Square Garden being the mecca of all sporting events it would likely be the UFC’s first and most obvious choice destination to hold an event in 2016.
