Carlos Condit secures unanimous decision victory over Matt Brown at UFC Fight Island VII

The UFC‘s first event of the new year will make history on Fight Island today, Saturday, January 16.

A battle between the former featherweight king Max Holloway and rising No. 6 contender Calvin Kattar serves as the headliner of UFC on ABC 1, the first mixed martial arts event ever to be hosted on ABC Network.

These two have been matched up twice before, the first in 2013, and the second in 2018, both of which fell through with Brown withdrawing due to injuries.

They were both healthy enough to make the walk today though, and that’s what matters at this point.

Condit hasn’t been the most active lately, but he did just snap his five-fight skid in October with a unanimous decision victory over The Ultimate Fighter 11 winner Court McGee, just the third decision victory of his 31 total wins.

Brown hasn’t been the most active recently either, as he came back in December of 2019 after a two-plus year break to KO Ben Saunders, before being KO’d last May by Miguel Baeza.

Continue reading to see how this epic battle went:

Round 1

Matt Brown immediately takes the center once the fight starts and lands a nice leg kick to open up the striking exchanges. About one minute in, Carlos Condit threw a combination, but got too close, where Brown capitalized and secured a body lock trip.

Brown had Condit down against the fence and reigned down ground-and-pound for the rest of the round, until there was about 15 seconds left, where Condit hit a switch and ended the round on top.

Round 2

Condit comes out much more aggressive in round two, before Brown lands a nasty elbow in an exchange. Brown took the center back after landing the elbow, and attempts a double leg as Condit was coming into him.

Brown’s timing on the takedown was perfect, but he was denied on the attempt. Brown tried for another takedown, this time walking Condit back toward the fence. He was unable to finish this one as well, but landed a nice elbow on the break.

Condit secures a foot sweep not long after. Brown was right back up, but Condit countered Brown’s get up with a single leg and put him on his back again and ends round two on top.

We’re quite clearly at one round a piece going into round three.

Round 3

Brown comes out in round three trying hard for another takedown, but is unable to secure any early on. Condit took Brown’s back in a grappling exchange, and things weren’t looking too well for Brown with a considerable amount of time left.

Condit bails on the back mount, but remained on top, before going back to it. Brown made his way up, and Condit immediately dropped to his back attempting to lock up a kimura, but loses it, and remained on his back for the last 90 seconds of the fight.

Official Result: Carlos Condit def. Matt Brown via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
