Conor McGregor vs Georges St-Pierre

Dana White interested in Conor McGregor vs Georges St-Pierre, lays out timeline

Georges St-Pierre may be challenging Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 217 next month, but that has not prevented talks of a potential fight with Conor McGregor from taking place.

In a recent interview with TSN, UFC President Dana White said the superfight between GSP and Mystic Mac could happen but not until later 2018.  Assuming that GSP defeats Bisping and wins the championship and that McGregor does return to the UFC to defend his lightweight title for the first time, tings would inch one step closer to the matchup.

“GSP would need to defend his title first at 185 [pounds] and Conor has some business to handle himself. It would be a year and a half down the road before we would even talk about that,” White said.

No official booking has been issued for McGregor to defend.  It is not even 100% that he will immediately defend.  Talks of a third matchup with Nate Diaz are still looming even though White says they are not immediately on his radar.  Then of course, there are still talks of McGregor competing in another boxing match following the August 26 blockbuster with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“Everybody’s intriguing for Conor McGregor. I mean, if you look at Conor McGregor at 145, 155 and 170 [pounds], everything is intriguing.”

Where would a Conor McGregor vs Georges St-Pierre fight take place?

“I don’t know where that would be,” White teased about a destination for McGregor vs. St-Pierre. “We could do it in Croke Park in Ireland, where there’s like 100,000 seats. You could do it here in Toronto, where we had 56,000 people, and you could do it in Vegas, which is always good, too.”

Aside from the obvious things that need to fall into place for this fight to take place, another item that the two competitors would need to come to terms on is weight.  McGregor’s last MMA fight was at 155 pounds, GSP’s at 170.  GSP will be challenging for the 185 pound title on November 4.  McGregor has competed twice at 170 pounds for the UFC against Nate Diaz.
