McGregor vs Poirier 2

Conor McGregor will open as a slight betting favorite over Dustin Poirier

Conor McGregor will be the betting favor in his rematch with Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

According to the oddsmakers at BetMGM, McGregor has opened as a -288 favorite. Meanwhile, Poirier is the betting underdog at -185 underdog.

Of course the reasoning behind the opening odds are due to the fact that McGregor already has a win over “The Diamond.” The two fought over six years ago at UFC 178 in September 2014 which marked the birthplace of “Mystic Mac.” Prior to the fight McGregor predicted he’d knock Poirier out in the first round and that’s exactly how the fight played out.

Since then both fighters have improved drastically as McGregor went on to rule over the featherweight and lightweight division simultaneously and Poirier claimed an interim lightweight title.

McGregor (22-4) has not been active as of late. When he fights on Jan. 23, it will mark his first fight in 371 days. In one his last outing at UFC 246 in January of this year by defeating Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in 40 seconds. Prior to that, the Irishman fought in 2018, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov by a fourth-round submission.

Poirier (26-6) has been extremely active over the  years on route to winning his interim title in 2019. He lost his undisputed title shot to Nurmagomedov by a third-round submission that same year. He has posted wins over former champions Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez and Max Holloway since moving up to 155 pounds. He also has a win over former interim champion Justin Gathje. Poirier is coming off a win in Dan Hooker in June and the fight is a “Fight of the Year” candidate.

While the news as been surfaced of the two fighting for some time now, the UFC just officially announced the fight yesterday on their social media accounts.
