UFC 200 gets new main event – Cormier vs Jones 2

Cormier vs Jones 2 at UFC 200

This morning several stars of the UFC were on Good Morning America when a big announcement revealing the new main event for UFC 200 was announced.

UFC President Dana White announced that Cormier vs Jones 2 will headline the event, July 9 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“UFC 200 has been, uh, interesting to say the least, putting this thing together,” White said on the show. “There’s been some crazy things that have gone on. Some ups and downs. Jon Jones just fought on Saturday night and won his fight against OSP. He’s been out for 15 months, and now he’s back, and he wants his light heavyweight UFC title back. So the main event will be Daniel Cormier versus Jon Jones.”

Cormier was supposed to defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Jones this past weekend at UFC 197, however he pulled out due to an injury in his foot.  Ovince Saint Preux stepped up on short notice to fight the number one pound-for-pound fighter on the planet in Jones, and the fight would go the distance with Jones earning a unanimous decision victory.

The Jones and Cormier rivalry goes back quite a ways as the two were first announced to fight each other in 2014 and the bout officially taking place on January 2, 2015.  Jones defeated Cormier, handing him his first loss.  Then after legal trouble, Jones was stripped of the title and Cormier and Anthony Johnson would fight for the title.  Cormier won the fight and was crowned champion, the belt in which Jones wants back.

UFC 200 also features two more title bouts, a featherweight bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, and a women’s bantamweight bout between Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes.
