Dana White: Kelvin Gastelum Could Earn Title shot With Next Win

As if the welterweight division wasn’t up in the air enough. This is what you get when you have such a deep talented division like the UFC welterweight class. You have questions regarding Georges St. Pierre’s return, Johny Hendricks versus Robbie Lawler trilogy getting cancelled (now Matt Brown has a shot at Hendricks), and Rory MacDonald is still left in purgatory, awaiting his shot at the welterweight title.

What better than to add another name in the title hunt: Kelvin Gastelum. Make no mistake, Gastelum’s resume is sufficient for him to earn a title shot with one more big win. Gastelum is a perfect 5-0 in the UFC (10-0 overall), and the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 17. Gastelum is currently ranked at number seven of the welterweight ranks, and his next fight is against number three ranked welterweight Tyron Woodley (14-3) at UFC 183.

“It’s definitely a possibility”, Dana White told reporters at LaAficion.milenio.com. “He (Gastelum) could fight Lawler for the title this year if he beats Tyron Woodley.” White continued his praise and approval of the 23-year old rising star, “This kid is great. Ever since he got to ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ he looked like one of the least experienced fighters and keeps surprising us. He keeps getting better, and look where he is now. It’s amazing. We’re very excited about him”.

A win over Woodley would give Gastelum a perfect 6-0 record in the UFC, and his third win over a top 15 opponent (previously defeated ranked opponents were Jake Ellenberger and Rick Story).
