Donald Cerrone earns title shot with win at UFC 187

Donald Cerrone continued his winning ways over Memorial Day weekend when he TKO’d John Makdessi in the second round (breaking Makdessi’s jaw in the process). The win made it eight straight for one of the most active fighters in the game. UFC president Dana White said during the post fight interviews that Cerrone will be next to face UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos.

Cerrone (28-6, 1 NC) was ranked number three in the UFC lightweight rankings going into the Makdessi fight. According to the UFC rankings today, Cerrone has now moved to tie for the number two ranking with Khabib Nurmagomedov, the opponent “Cowboy” was originally slated to face until the Russian withdrew with another knee injury sustained during training.

Cerrone has not lost a fight in nearly two years, and as mentioned earlier, has now won eight straight fights in the UFC, with three fights already into 2015 (not even half-way into the year). Cerrone’s last loss came at the hands of newly crowned lightweight champion, Rafael Dos Anjos.

Dos Anjos and Cerrone met at UFC Fight Night – Condit vs. Kampmann 2. Dos Anjos grinded out Cerrone into a unanimous decision victory in that fight. There is no set date for the Cerrone vs. Dos Anjos rematch, however, Dos Anjos is recovering from MCL surgery and is on track for a return end of October, beginning November.
