Why Floyd Mayweather Should Fear Conor McGregor’s KO Threat

The fight between the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the legendary MMA fighter Conor McGregor will finally be pushing through. The $1 billion fight will be taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Aug. 26.

This matchup between the self-proclaimed “G.O.A.T” and the brave Irishman who’s willing to defy the odds is probably the biggest surprise in the history of combat sports. Mayweather who’s had a glamorous 49-0 record after reigning supreme over carefully hand-picked opponents will be taking on the only fighter to hold two belts simultaneously in UFC history.

Some say that it’s a big mismatch knowing that McGregor will be stepping out of his comfort zone to face the 40-year-old veteran in boxing rules. But is it really the case?

Well, there might be some truth to that if one was to base on statistics alone. However, as what one can see with the Irishman’s current situation, things seem to suggest otherwise as he’s proving his rash antics to have meaty substance.

Conor McGregor Knocks Down His Sparring Partner

Conor McGregor has recently posted a photo on his Instagram account which shows him knocking down his sparring partner. In the photo, the 29-year-old fighter extends his right arm as he strikes the head of the already fallen boxer.

As he’s doing it, his left arm can be seen gaining momentum preparing to strike another punch. But then again, it’s just a picture, and we’ll never know the intensity of the knockdown.

This shows that he’s got some serious firepower tucked under his sleeves, and Mayweather should be made aware of this. Frankly speaking, Floyd Jr. still hasn’t faced an opponent like Conor.

And even if the Irishman doesn’t have any prior professional boxing experience, he’s still worthy to be feared upon. Why? Take for example the series of blows Conor rained on his debut fight against Marcus Brimage.

It only took him 60 seconds to knock him down. Then there’s the series of counter punches that took down Brimage in just 13 seconds at UFC 194.

Former Welterweight boxing champion, Paulie Malignaggi, recently fought McGregor in a sparring match. And even he can attest to the ferociousness and power of Conor’s punches. Malignaggi says that if the Irishman lands a clean punch on Mayweather’s head, there’s a big chance that he’ll be sending the American flat on the floor.

McGregor Hints Unorthodox KO Technique on Mayweather

Many believe that Conor McGregor will take on an unorthodox type-of-style when he faces Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26. And it’s what his fans and other hopeful pundits believe to be the only way for him to knock the “undefeated” face-flat on the ground.

Unsurprisingly, that’s just what Conor hints as what his recent post on his Instagram account looked like. The photo was taken on his training session with Owen Roddy, his striking coach.

He can be seen high off in the air as he gains revs up to strike a fiendish left-hand punch. Take note that it was this move that took down 18 of his previous MMA opponents.

An accompanying caption can be seen saying “Re-writing prizefighting.” Obviously, Conor is trying to show what a real fighting champion does – and that is inflicting massive damage on an opponent.

This is very opposite to Mayweather’s fighting style where he merely dodges, if not hugs his opponent to stall the barrage of punches he can’t handle. It’s what we’ve seen in the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight of 2015.

Betting Odds on McGregor vs. Mayweather Fight

Conor McGregor is obviously the underdog as he has a 0-0-0 pro boxing record, while Mayweather Jr. has 49-0. After all, that’s what supposed experts and pundits consider, right?

Because of this, initial betting odds on Nov. 17 were at a record-high gap with -2250 for Floyd and +950 for Conor. But as the trash talks between the two flew over social media, odds began turning to Conor’s side, becoming -700 and +450.

When the fight was officially confirmed on June 14, the trend continued, putting McGregor in a close +400 odds to Mayweather’s -600. The pattern went on and the closest the odds have been was on July 25 with -550 and +375.

This is probably due to the series of Instagram posts McGregor had which made the hopes of the people run high. The current betting odds between Mayweather and McGregor are -600 and +400 respectively.

With all of these being said, the choice now ends up on you. But before you put any amount on either the two, it makes perfect sense for you to first check out the latest betting tips for the upcoming fight. A concluding word of advice — remember that unexpected things do happen every once in a while. The best of luck!
