Georges St-Pierre and UFC reach agreement, contract pending

It looks as if former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is one-step closer to finally returning to competition inside the octagon.

According to a new report from Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting, GSP is on the “verge of signing a new multi-fight contract with the promotion.

“After months of on-and-off negotiations, both sides have agreed to terms on a new deal, MMA Fighting has learned.

“While St-Pierre’s return fight has yet to be finalized, the current plan is for him to compete later this year. A return in the third quarter of 2017 is currently being targeted, sources say.

“UFC officials declined to comment on the impending deal.”

GSP announced he was leaving mixed martial arts back and relinquished his title after defeating Johny Hendricks in the main event at UFC 167 in November 2013.

“Rush” had major concerns with the sport’s performance enhancing drug problem and was a proponent of getting a fix in place.

Recent negotiations between the former champ and the UFC had hit a bit of a hiccup because of the organization’s deal with Reebok which came into play after GSP walked away from the organization.  GSP is currently sponsored by Under Armour so it will be interesting to see how that comes into play with this new deal.
