JiuJitsuThing.com – It’s a Jiu Jitsu Thing

It’s a Jiu-Jitsu thing, and you wouldn’t understand.

That’s how the owner and founder of JiuJitsuThing.com described the birth of the name of his clothing line that is making waves in the grappling community.

28-year old James Young still gets questions to this day about some of the shirts that he has printed depicting various Jiu-Jitsu terms and references.

“During that time period when I just started vending and everyone in the Jiu-Jitsu and MMA community was loving the couple shirts I had made up I would get people that weren’t in that world look at it and go ‘I don’t get it,’ Young said.

“My response was always, ‘it’s a Jiu-Jitsu Thing.’ That phrase spawned the name, and really the mantra for what we do.”

Though, JiuJitsuThing.com was officially launched in February of this year, it unofficially started in 2013.

“I had a couple shirts that I wanted to print because I thought they would make awesome shirts. I had such a great response to them from the Jiu-Jitsu and MMA community, I decided to print up a bunch and vend at a local grappling competition. Again, the response was amazing. I needed to take this to the next level,” Young said.

So he invested more time and money into the business and now has a staff of six employees including a graphic designer, Steve Robinson, and a team of venders. Young’s states that his better half, Lauren McCall, is very involved.

“She keeps me organized and everything running as smoothly as possible. In all honesty, without these people, JiuJitsuThing.com would have never taken off. A great team and support system, is one of the keys to succeeding in anything.”

What goes into a shirt?

“My brain never sleeps. I have a ton of designs waiting to be launched but I don’t like to rush things. Some of our designs are things that only those that do it, would get. Our other designs and ideas tie together trends in pop culture into Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. So the average person can get something from it as well. The process goes like this; I have a thought, I mock it up as best as I can. I send it to my good friend. We talk it out and he is really good at getting inside of my brain, to know exactly what I am looking to do with each design. He gets them shirt ready. Then we go to print.”

Jiu-Jitsu Business

Young states that they currently only sell their product online but he is fine with that.

“Currently, we do not have a physical store. As much as I want to, I don’t think it will ever be needed for this type of business. Why try to have a niche market come to a specific location? Instead, we find the best ways to bring our products to them. Online, and physically to the places this market will gather, grappling competitions, and MMA events.”

Young attends many mixed martial arts and grappling events, often setting up a JiuJitsuThing.com booth or table.

“I will say that of all the events we do and have done, Cage Fury Fighting Championships puts on the best events. Currently, it is all east coast for us. That will definitely change in the future, likely for next year. I am in the process of setting up vendors in various areas of the country.”

Knowledge of the Game

“I started my Martial Arts training in 1995 and never really stopped. It would just roll into another style, a new challange,” Young said.

“I love the Martial Arts and live Jitsu, both Japanese style Jujitsu and Brazilian style Jiu-Jitsu. For that reason you can find yourself to our website by typing in JiuJitsuThing.com or JuJitsuThing.com.”

In 2012, Young earned the rank of brown belt in Shingitai Jujitsu under Sean Daugherty (UFC 2) and David Elias.

The SJA is a great Jujitsu association founded by John Saylor (Coach of the U.S. Judo Olympic Training Center, 1983-90).

It’s a You-Jitsu Thing

“In 2011, I earned the rank of Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, under Pat Stano (Sergio Penha). Though, it can be very tough finding time to train, I still make it happen. Over the years I have trained in many arts such as traditional Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do, Aikido, Close Quarter Combatives, Catch Wrestling, Jeet Kune Do, etc. People can get caught up in a name, or style. To me it’s all the study of yourself. It’s a YOU-JITSU thing.”

Future of the Game

“Whether it’s 10 days from now, or 10 years from now, JiuJitsuThing.com will continue to think outside of the box to provide unique products. Currently it is unique apparel. In about 10 weeks, we will be launching unique Gi products and training gear. In about 10 months, we should be getting into unique training equipment. You will have to continue to tune in to JiuJitsuThing.com to find out exactly what these products will be. I will say this, we will be around for the long run.”

For Grappling Info

On Young’s site JiuJitsuThing.com there is a competition locator that was created as a convenient way for grappling competitors to see, at a glance, which competitions are within driving distance.

“It is still at its beginning stages so I encourage all grappling competitions to contact us with event dates to add. We vend with very few of these. This list is for the competitive grapplers’ convenience. “
