How Joe Riggs Went From the Gurney Back to the Octagon

UFC fighter Joe Riggs details his near-fatal gunshot accident and road back to the cage before his upcoming UFC fight December 13 in this feature on AXS TV’s Inside MMA.

Riggs (40-14) was injured from the gunshot earlier this summer.  Miraculously he is healed up just months later and will be taking on Ben Saunders (17-6-2) this weekend in Phoenix, Arizona at UFC on FOX 13.  In this video both he and his wife talk about that horrific day and the fighter’s path to recovery.

Riggs is on a six-fight win streak.  His last, a win over Mike Bronzoulis in November 2013 where he won the culmination of Bellator’s reality show “Fight Master” which is similar to the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter.

This is the Riggs’ first fight back in the UFC since he lost to Diego Sanchez in December 2006, an eight-year time frame.

Saunders is coming off an omoplata submission win over Chris Heatherly in August of this year.  It was the first time in the UFC’s 20 plus year history that an omoplata finished a fight inside the octagon. That was Saunder’s first trip back to the UFC since he left in August 2010.
