Jon Jones takes plea deal in drag-racing charges

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones appeared in the Bernalillo Metropolitan Court yesterday where he pled guilty to charges of unlawful exhibition driving and improper display of registration, according to court spokesperson Camille Baca. The infraction came March 24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Video of the incident in which Jones called the police officer involved, a “f—ing liar” went viral and many speculated that it would again be the end of Jones’ already tarnished career.

Jones eventually did come back and fought Ovince St. Preux where he captured the organization’s interim light heavyweight title.   He then was scheduled to headline at UFC 200 against Daniel Cormier to unify the belt but was pulled following a USADA violation just days before the event.

For the drag-racing incident, Jones received a 90-day deferred sentence. The court ordered 60 hours of community service and completion of an aggressive driving class. The judge did note Jones has fulfilled 51 hours of community service for a district court case, which he will be credited for.

Three additional charges — unlawful drag racing, unlawful use of modification of exhaust systems and failure to maintain traffic lane — were dismissed, in accordance with the deal.

Jones is currently under suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
