Conor McGregor to challenge Eddie Alvarez for title in UFC 205 main event

After weeks of speculation, rumors, and even denial, the UFC 205 main event has been announced.  UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor once again moves up in weight, this time to challenge UFC lightweight champion for the 155-pound belt in Madison Square Garden.UFC 205 main event

McGregor, who won the featherweight strap after defeating longtime champion Jose Aldo back in December has yet to defend his title.  Recently, UFC President Dana White denied that McGregor would be getting this shot at Alvarez because it was time that he defended the belt after fighting Nate Diaz twice this year at welterweight.

White even went on to say that Alvarez would defend his title against Khabib Nurmagomedov.  That fight was rumored to headline UFC 206 in Toronto.  That led fans to believe that McGregor would make the venture back down to 145 to rematch the man he beat in Aldo.  Aldo defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 to gain the interim title.

Hopefully at today’s UFC 205 press conference we will get answers as to what will happen in the featherweight division now that McGregor is fighting out of his weight class for a third straight fight.

The UFC 205 headliner is the third title fight to hit the Big Apple in the UFC¹s first show in New York State. Also on the card in the co-main event, Tyron Woodley defends his welterweight title against Stephen Thompson. Also, women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defends against Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

Also, earlier today White went on a radio station in New York to announce former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero.

Tickets for UFC 205 go on sale Friday.
