Michael Bisping to defend UFC middleweight title against Georges St-Pierre

UFC President Dana White today announced via ESPN that UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping will defend his title against former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

It seemed apparent that Yoel Romero was likely the next contender to Bisping’s title, even after White himself said that was the fight to make.

Then just days ago the blockbuster announcement that GSP is returning to competition for the first time since November 2013.  That announcement threw a monkey wrench into everything because it was uncertain whether he would return to welterweight or move up to middleweight.

GSP announced he was leaving mixed martial arts back and relinquished his title after defeating Johny Hendricks in the main event at UFC 167 in November 2013.

In advance of their bout, both Bisping and St-Pierre will host a press event on Friday, March 3 at 2 p.m. PT prior to the weigh-ins for UFC 209: WOODLEY vs THOMPSON 2 at T-Mobile Arena.

A date or venue for the contest has not yet been announced.
