NAC Director says judge incorrectly scored 5th round of Woodley – Thompson 2

Nevada Athletic Commission chief Bob Bennett appeared at the UFC 209 post fight press conference and took the microphone to discuss what many have called a controversial scoring in the main event rematch between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

Sal D’Amato, one of the assigned judges for the contest scored the fifth and final round 10-8.  Woodley ended up winning a Majority Decision (48-47, 47-47, 48-7).

“Thank God it didn’t affect the overall outcome of the fight,” Bennett said per an article by MMAJunkie.

“The one judge that had it 10-8 – we went over it in the debriefing, and that 10-8 was unacceptable. Not that it would have affected the outcome of the fight, but just to share it with you, we certainly strive to do the best we can – we don’t always succeed – and that judge should have scored that round 10-9. You can’t have a three-point swing in 50 seconds.”

Bennett was referring to the final minute of the fight where he briefly hurt the challenger.  Many scoring at home, including UFC President Dana White, saw the outcome differently, scoring it three rounds in favor of Thompson.

The fight was a rematch from their original outing that went to a draw in the co-main event of UFC 205 in November.
