Ohio State Leads by .5 After Round One at the NCAA DI Wrestling Championships

At the conclusion of the first round, the Big Ten continues to dominate the tournament with their perennial powers, Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa, and a couple of surprise contenders at the top – Nebraska and Michigan. The returning national champions take the victory in round one by half-a-point over Cael Sanderson’s Nittany Lions.

A surprising Nebraska CornHuskers team is sitting in third place with 13 points on the back of their ten tournament entries. Iowa slid to fourth place after No. 13 seed Meyers lost a close match 10-9 to Gordon Wolf of Lehigh University in the 174-pound bracket.

Michigan and Mizzou bounced up to fifth, finishing in a three way tie with Oklahoma State. The Wolverines leaped into fifth place after round one with wins by Abounader, Huntley, and a Fall by Coon. J’Den Cox fall at 1:18 over Rutgers  Hayden Hrymack. Oklahoma State sits at fifth with 10 points as they earned bonus points from their two-time returning national champion at 165, Alex Dieringer. Joe Smith came back in his opening match after trailing by five against Ohio State’s Jake Ryan, 11-9 in sudden victory. 

N.C. State finds them self in eighth place with nine points. Their two-time national champion and No. 1 seed, Nick Gwiazdowski earned a tech fall at 7:00 (15-0) over Gage Hutchison (EMU). No. 2 seed Thomas Gantt of the Wolfpack also earned a tech fall at 5:58 (21-4) over Andrew Morse (NIU).

Session two begins tonight at 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden, which will include round 2 of the championship bracket, plus the first round of wrestle backs.
