Overeem Awaits Next Opponent; Expecting Dos Santos

Alistair Overeem has proven with back-to-back wins (over ranked heavyweights nonetheless) that the “Demolition Man” still has enough in the tank for a shot at the UFC heavyweight title. Overeem (39-14, 1 NC) is currently ranked eighth in the UFC heavyweight rankings, and anxiously awaits his next opponent.

Of the seven fighters sitting above Overeem in the rankings, only two have not recently fought: Josh Barnett (number five) and Junior Dos Santos (number three). Overeem told MMA reporters that former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos would be a logical match up next for him. Overeem also knows that a win over the former heavyweight champion could give him that boost as a title contender.

A fight against Barnett would also be big for Overeem, if he would defeat either the fifth ranked heavyweight, he could still potentially earn a title shot, and at 35 years of age, the Dutchman knows that time isn’t exactly on his side.

Overeem last fought at UFC 185 back in March, defeating Roy Nelson in a unanimous decision. The former Strikeforce heavyweight champion says that he has been training and keeping busy awaiting the call from the UFC matchmakers to set him up with an opponent.
