Approximately a month after he proudly announced his decision to join the Islamic State (ISIS), German-Albanian Muay Thai champion Valdet Gashi has reportedly died fighting for the extremist ideology.

According to Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, Gashi died over a week ago in Syria. The news was revealed once Gashi’s brother posted it on his personal Facebook account.

The World Muay Thai champion, who claimed to have been in Thailand training for the last few months before his announcement, revealed his true intentions in a 90-minute phone interview with the SRF journalists. At the time, Gashi confirmed his support of the ISIS ideology and justified his involvement with the terrorist organization.

“I want to do something good and to die while doing it. That is what would make me happy,” he said.

Given that Gashi had recently celebrated the birth of his first child, his family responded to the news of his travel with criticism, as they explained that his “place is with us – with his children, his wife and his parents.”

“I hope that he keeps his promise to help only humans, and not make another stupid – and that he eventually returns to us,” his father Enver Gashi had said.
