Ronda Rousey to get immediate Holly Holm rematch; Miesha Tate screwed?

It is a fact, is without a shadow of doubt, that Ronda Rousey has done more for women’s mixed martial arts than any female fighter on the planet.  Up until her recent knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193, Rousey was undefeated and the only women’s bantamweight champion in UFC history.

Going into the bout with Holm it seemed that even if Rousey lost, a rematch would be imminent because well…. she was the only champion in the organization’s history and she was labeled as the most dominant champion in the sport.

Then the bell rung.  What we witness was Rousey getting completely outworked by Holm, who would get the win, taking the title in the process.

Today, UFC President Dana White confirmed that even though fans were split on the idea of Rousey getting the immediate rematch due to her performance, she likely would get it.

“I think that if we didn’t make the rematch, me and [UFC CEO] Lorenzo [Fertitta] should probably lose our promoters’ license,” White said on the morning ESPN radio show Mike & Mike. “Yeah, that fight’s going to happen. I don’t know when, but that’s the fight that will happen.”

“Ronda Rousey has gone undefeated, taken the sport to another level and was beating the best women in the world in 14 seconds or 30 seconds, so she deserves a rematch,” he said. “Holly agrees she deserves a rematch, and we’ll figure it out.”

With that announcement it once again pushes Miesha Tate to the back burner.  While it was looking like Holm’s first title defense might be against Tate while Rousey sits on the shelf, UFC brass does not want to let the pay-per-view opportunity go to waste.

Tate already had her title shot taken away once when Holm was named the challenger in her place.  No timeline for a Rousey-Holm rematch has been announced but if Tate has to wait much longer she might consider stirring up that retirement talk once again.
