Rousimar Palhares to defend title against Jake Shields, WSOF 22

The fighter and champion many consider to be one of the dirtiest fighters in the game, Rousimar Palhares will defend his World Series of Fighting welterweight title against Jake Shields in the headlining bout of WSOF 22, August 1.

Palhares has been subject of controversy as he has injured fighters with a variety of his specialty leg submissions, sometimes even after his opponents have tapped.

He defeated Steve Carl with an inverted heel hook in the first round at WSOF 9 last March when he captured the title.  He also bested another former UFC cast away in Jon Fitch in just 90 seconds at WSOF 16 in December.

Shields, (31-7) has two first round submission wins since coming to WSOF.  He was vastly considered to be one of the best welterweights on the planet upon his arrival in the UFC in 2010. After struggling in the promotion he was let go and debuted in the WSOF in October 2014 with a rear-naked-choke win over Ryan Ford.

The Nevada Athletic Commission on Tuesday approved the WSOF’s request to hold an event at Planet Hollywood AXS Theater in Las Vegas.  Palhares vs. Shields will be an interesting chess match between two highly talented jiu-jitsu specialists.
