UFC 173 Results – A New Champion is Crowned

UFC 173 went down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Renan Barao and T.J. Dillashaw.

Barao, entered the octagon riding a 35-fight win-streak is widely considered either the number one or number two pound-for-pound fighter in the world.  The argument could have been made for either Barao or UFC light heavyweight champion Jon ‘Bone’ Jones.

T.J. Dillashaw didn’t care and dominated the champ for four plus rounds, doing what his mentor, Urijah Faber could not do. Dillashaw defeated Barao in the fifth round via TKO.  This would also be the last fight on the contract of Team Alpha Male head coach Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig.

In the first fight of the pay-per-view former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner showed true guts as he broke his ankle in the opening minute of the first round and was repeatedly kicked, tripped, and stumbled due to the injury.  He fought back but eventually the fight was stopped in between the first and second round and James Krause earned a victory over Varner via TKO.

Robbie Lawler proved exactly why he was recently fighting for a title as he completely outclassed Jake Ellenberger winning via TKO in round 3.  But when you talk about outclass……..Daniel Cormier…..did Dan Henderson even show up for that fight?  DC threw the history books out the window and made Hendo look amateur, manhandling him for 2.5 rounds before choking him out in the third.
