UFC 178 Results – Demetrious Johnson defeats Chris Cariaso

UFC 178 was the card that most every mixed martial arts fan was waiting for.  And to think, it might have actually been even better had the original main event of Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier not been postponed.  The very anticipated event went down from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and featured the return of two fighters who had extremely long layoffs due to injury and personal reasons and made for interesting story lines.

Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson proved why he is near the top of the list of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters with his win over a previously unheard of Chris Cariaso, but was that the biggest story line of UFC 178?  Probably not.

Cat Zingano and Dominick Cruz each felt the pain and agony of ACL injury and surgeries.  Cruz may have suffered a multitude of nagging injuries stalling his return to the octagon but it was Zingano who may have endured a more mental and personal test with the loss of her husband and the father of her son earlier this year following her injury.

Zingano had a rough start in the opening minutes of her bout with Amanda Nunes but Zingano weathered the storm, kept attempting submissions, held strong, and controlled the last minute of the first round and was completely dominant in the second and finished the fight with strikes in Round 3.  With the win, Zingano will get the next crack at UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey.

Dominick Cruz proved all the doubters wrong.  The former bantamweight champion who never actually lost his title to defeat, rather to inactivity due to injury defeated Takeya Mizugaki without contest early in the first round of their three round affair.  Cruz is back and wants his title back.

Donald Cerrone overcame an early onslaught from the former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez to win the fight via unanimous decision.

The hype continued as the Conor McGregor train will keep on rolling.  He defeats Poirier in the first round as he predicted.

The controversy of the night came in the Tim Kennedy – Yoel Romero fight.  Kennedy had Romero near TKO at end of Round 2. In between rounds, Romero’s corner took their time when the buzzer sounded and they even came back into the cage. Big John McCarthy kicked them out. He bounced back in beginning of 3rd and TKO’d Kennedy.
