UFC 179 Results – Jose Aldo retains title in decision win over Chad Mendes

UFC 179 aired tonight, Oct. 25, at the Maracanzinho Gymnasium in Rio De Janeiro, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.  The event will be live on Pay-Per-View here in the U.S. beginning at 10 p.m. EST.

Long reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo  defended his title for the second time against Team Alpha Male’s Chad Mendes.  Mendes was defeated via KO from a flying knee just seconds before the buzzer at the end of the first round just two years ago.

Tonight the fight would go much longer, into the fifth round for a decision.  The scorecards may have been off a bit but Aldo won via unanimous decision although Mendes looked a bit healthier at the conclusion.

In the co-main event Penn State alum and wrestling standout Phil Davis dominated Glover Teixeira to also win a unanimous decision victory.

The crowd grew restless after the first two fights on the pay-per-view went to a decision.  The internet nearly imploded as Twitter was flooded with comments about how boring UFC 179 had been.  Then Fabio Maldonado came to the stage and defeated Hans Stringer via TKO in Round 2 of their three round affair.  Anderson ‘the Spider’ Silva jumped up to the top of the UFC octagon cage to congratulate Maldonado following his win.

Neil Magny tied Roger Huerta’s record of the five wins in one calendar year, the most in the modern era of the UFC, with his third round win over William ‘Patolino’ Macario via TKO.
