UFC 181- Pettis Brothers Fight On Same Card

Two of the most prolific brothers in MMA will be competing tonight at UFC 181. Anthony “Showtime” Pettis defends his light weight belt against Gilbert Melendez in the co-main event on Pay-Per-View and Sergio “Phenom” Pettis fights on UFC Fight Pass against Matt Hobar.

The Milwaukee native’s train out of Roufusport under head trainer Jeff “Duke” Roufus. Roufusport has become one of the most elite MMA gyms in the nation as they continue to pump out high quality professional fighters and collecting belts along the way. The gym currently has the ONE FC welterweight champion Ben Askren, WSOF feather weight Champion Rick Glenn, and of course, UFC lightweight world champion Anthony Pettis.

Sergio Pettis enters the octagon holding a 2-1 UFC record and coming off a rebound victory. His only blemish came earlier in the year on January 25, 2014, when he lost by a Rear Naked Choke to Alex Caceres in a fight that earned both fighters a fight bonus for Fight of The Night Honors. A rebound unanimous decision came six months later on June 7, 2014, when the “Phenom” earned a unanimous decision over Yaotzin Meza.

Sergio Pettis’ opponent Matt “The CrowBar” Hobar enters the cage with a UFC record of 1-1 and an overall MMA record of 9-2.

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis will be battling #1 contender Gilbert Melendez in the co-main event. Pettis makes his first title defense of his Lightweight belt since defeating Ben Henderson back in August of 2013 for the title. Pettis has an overall record of 17-2 in his career. Seven wins come by the way of TKO and Seven come by submission.

Melendez is five years the elders and contends for the title owning a record of 22-3. His last bout was in October of 2013 against Diego Sanchez, and is seen as one of the greatest fights of all-time. The two fought to the bloody end of a three round war. Melendez is a grinder as 10 of his wins come from decision, one by submission and 11 by TKO.

Fans are expecting fireworks in the co-main event and should. Both fighters have tremendous heart and explosive skills. UFC President has be quoted saying UFC 181’s Anthony Pettis is “pound-for-pound Best fighter in the world” according to MMAJunkie.com.
