UFC 183 results – Silva returns victorious over Diaz, retirement talks emerge

UFC 183 was the last of four major UFC events this January, part of the promotion’s “Time is Now” campaign.  The main event was a super fight between former UFC middleweight champion and pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet, Anderson “the Spider” Silva and Nick Diaz.

Silva had not fought since his horrific leg break injury in his title rematch against champion Chris Weidman in December 2013.  It was also Diaz’ first fight back at middleweight in several years.  He had not fought since a decision loss to Georges St. Pierre in the spring of 2013.

During the first round, Diaz taunted Silva; begging him to come at him with strikes.  At one point, Diaz even laid down and pretended to sleep as if he were bored.

The fight would end up going the distance, five full rounds, but was a little less exciting that many fans had hoped for.

After Silva’s name was announced as the winner the Brazilian flopped to the canvas in tears.  Diaz not wanting to see the legend like that, helped pick him up and console him.  While being interviewed by Joe Rogan post fight, Silva discussed going back to spend time with his family whom he said wanted him to hang up his gloves.

Later in the evening, Silva said, “Now it’s over,” at Saturday’s post-fight press conference.

That may have been the last time we see the greatest mixed martial artist of all time inside the UFC octagon.

In the co-main event Kelvin Gastelum and Tyron Woodley fought in a welterweight contest.  Gastelum could have potentially earned a title shot with a win, however that opportunity was now be in jeopardy as the welterweight weighed in as a near middleweight.  Gastelum was supposed to hit the scale at 170 but instead reached the 180 mark.  It was later discovered that Gastelum was near the 170 mark but had been ill all weak and eventually broke and went to the hospital for flu like symptoms.

In a somewhat lackluster fight Gastelum dropped a split decision to Woodley.  Woodley inches one step closer to a welterweight championship bout.

Flyweight Jon Lineker’s weight issues as he missed the mark at weigh-ins once again, this time by five pounds. Although he earned a decision over Ian McCall, UFC President Dana White has seen enough and said Lineker will have to move up a division after failing to meet weight for a fourth time.

On the main event on the UFC on Fox Sports 1 prelims, Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate defeated U.S. Olympian Sara McMann via majority decision.

Performance of the night bonuses were handed out to Thales Leites and Tim Boetsch, as well as Thiago Alves.  Leites and Boetsch for the fight of the evening and Leites with the submission of the night, earned the Brazilian an even $100,000 in bonuses.  Boetsch and Alves each pocketed $50,000.
