UFC 198 results:   Werdum vs. Miocic

UFC 198: Werdum vs. Miocic takes place today at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.

ATTENDANCE RECORD SET

The UFC’s Brazilian attendance record was set tonight with more than 45,000 fans gathering in Curitiba.

Earlier this week former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva had to be pulled from the card and was placed into doctor’s care for surgery to remove his gal bladder.  His opponent, Uriah Hall was also removed from the card.

Every fight on the night featured a Brazilian fighter.  Renato Moicano was the first Brazilian to step into the octagon at UFC 198 and also the first to record a win.

THE BREAKDOWN

In the main event UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum defended his title against Stipe Miocic.  WOW!!!! What else can you say?  WOW.  Most of the Brazilians on the card won tonight and then in the main event… Stipe Miocic knocks out Fabricio Werdum to get the title.

The co-main event featured a pivotal middleweight matchup as top ranked fighters, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souze and Vitor Belfort finally went toe-to-toe.  The fight was not what everyone expected.  One would thing Jacare would want to use Jiu-Jitsu while Belfort, the strikes.  It was Jacare who bloodied Belfort in the opening minutes and had to be checked by a doctor.  The fight then continued, and again Jacare pushed the pace, ending the fight via TKO in the first round.

The Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane Justino, also known as “Cyborg” mades her long awaited UFC debut.  She made quick work of Leslie Smith, dismantling her via TKO inside a minute and a half, however Smith protested the stoppage, screaming profanities during the announcement.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua met the surging Corey Anderson at light heavyweight.  The two 205-pounders stood toe-to-toe during round 1, trading shots in and out, with Shogun finding a soft spot in Anderson’s lead leg.  Anderson found his range with his jab but in the end of the first round Shogun dropped the Ultimate Fighter winner and continued to pound on him, only to be saved by the bell.

In the second round Anderson used his wrestling to take the fight to the canvas and worked his ground and pound, but when the fight stood back up the round ended the same way as the first, Shogun landing a big shot, knocking Anderson to the ground and working til the bell sounded.

The third round was more of Anderson working his wrestling, but ultimately the decision went to the Brazilian in a split decision even though some of the hometown crowd disagreed.

Bryan Barbarena was the first non-Brazilian to win tonight as all fights on UFC Fight Pass and Fox Sports 1 were won by Brazilians.  He defeated Warlley Alves via unanimous decision.

Matt Brown did an incredible job in defending off submission after submission attempt by the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner in mixed martial arts in Demian Maia.  For nearly three full rounds Brown fought off choke attempt after choke attempt for almost fifteen full minutes. In the final minute Brown was submitted via rear-naked choke.

Thiago “Marreta” Santos defeated Nate Marquart in devastating fashion in the very first round via knockout.  Santos put down the seven-time King of Pancrase with brutal strikes to record yet another win.

Yancy Medeiros vs. Francisco Trinaldo could have easily been the fight of the night thus far as the two fighters slugged it out back and forth for three rounds with both fighters nearly being finished several times.  The 45,000 plus crowd was on their feet cheering for these two fighters before the final bell rang.

The first Brazilian to compete in the UFC’s flyweight division, John Lineker looked impressive against Rob Font to open the Fox Sports 1 portion of the card.  Lineker outstruck Font on the feet and showed increased cardio from his previous bouts.

What an impressive victory for Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in his home country and in the feature fight on UFC Fight Pass to score a first round technical knockout over the American wrestling standout Patrick Cummins.
