UFC 209 Results: Woodley Retains Title Against Thompson

UFC 209 Results:  Thompson vs. Woodley 2

UFC 209 was headlined by a welterweight title rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson. The two fought to a draw at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in November. Here are the UFC 209 results.

Tonight the score was settled at the T-Mobile Arena which was also announced yesterday as the home of the UFC when in Las Vegas.

The evening’s co-main event was to have the interim lightweight title on the line as undefeated 24-0, Khabib Nurmagomedov was set to take on rising star, Tony Ferguson.  The winner would have likely received a shot at champion, Conor McGregor.

Just before weigh-ins rumors started circulating that Nurmagomedov had been taken to the hospital.  There were talks about possibly keeping the fight booked but only offering the interim shot to Ferguson. Since then the fight has all together been cancelled.  Story here.

Amanda Bobby Cooper fought UFC newcomer Cynthia Calvillo on the main card. Calvillo defeated Cooper via submission in the first round, by way of Rear-Naked Choke. Lando Vannata fell to David Teymur inside the octagon in the co-main event.  Teymur earned a unanimous decision, winning all three rounds on the judges’ scored cards.

Performance of the Night??

Darren Elkins showed pure heart in his victory over Mirsad Bektic. For nearly three rounds, Bektic battered Elkins in numerous positions. Bektic completed numerous significant strikes while standing, in addition to Bektic’s multiple takedowns.

Bektic’s domination ended after a reversal and Elkins took advantage of his opportunity landing a solid combination that rendered Bektic unconscious. The bloody and battered Elkins stole the victory from Bektic after hanging on through a three-round beating.
