UFC 212 results: Jose Aldo vs. Max Holloway – Featherweight title unification bout

UFC 212 Results

UFC 212 took place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, headlined by a featherweight title unification fight between champion Jose Aldo, and interim champion Max Holloway. What a championship fight this was.  Champion vs. Champion.  Aldo may have found some success in the start, but Holloway came back in the second and a hematoma formed on the left side of the head of Aldo.  Holloway taunted Aldo but then Aldo bounced back at the end of the second.  Then, in the third, wow, would things change.  We have a new UFC featherweight champion.  Max Holloway put Jose Aldo away via strikes.

Also, former women’s strawweight title challengers, Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz looked to get back into title contention as these two top 115-pounders faced off for the first time.  The fight didn’t last long, Gadelha is looking that third title shot.

UFC legend Vitor Belfort was to have fought in his final fight as he took on Nate Marquardt. He ended up defeating Marquardt via unanimous decision, and revealed that he signed a five-fight contract.

Two hard-hitting middeweights went to war.  Paulo Borrachinha of Brazil, defeated Oluwale Bamgbose, of New York, New York, but not before each fighter threw everything including the kitchen sink.  Great fight, but Borrachinha’s stock will rise.

Yancy Medeiros landed a left hook on Erick Silva in the second round of their opening scrap on pay-per-view.  The shot knocked the Brazilian down to the mat, and the Hawaiian followed up with ground and pound before the referee jumped in.  The referee’s stoppage may have been premature as Silva was defending but ultimately Medeiros walks away with the victory.

Marlon Moraes comes up short in UFC debut

Also, former World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes made his UFC debut against Raphael Assuncao.  This was a fun fight that had the newcomer winning on paper after racking up a 14-fight win-streak.  But would that be enough for the win streak of Assuncao in Brazil?  A split decision victory in favor of the Brazilian handed Moraes a loss in his UFC debut.

Antonio Carlos Junior defeated Eric Spicely via rear-naked choke submission in a matchup between two Jiu-Jitsu specialists.

Back to back wins for the Americans in Brazil

Matthew Lopez defeated Johnny Eduardo via TKO in the first round while UFC newcomer Brian ‘Boom’ Kelleher defeated Iuri Alcantara in Brazil in under two minutes via guillotine.  Very solid win for the former Ring of Combat champion.
