UFC 213 Results: Romero vs. Whittaker for interim middleweight title

UFC 213 Results: Romero vs. Whittaker for interim middleweight title

In main event for tonight’s UFC 213 pay-per-view broadcast was cancelled just hours ago as a rematch between Amanda Nunes (14-4) and Valentina Shevchenko (14-2) is now off the card.  Nunes, the champion, felt ill and went to an area hospital, later withdrawing from the contest.

The co-main event featuring top middleweights Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker fighting for an opportunity to take on champion Michael Bisping at a later date, is now the main event.  This fight is for the interim title.

What a fight this was.  Whittaker hurt his knee early on but was able to continue to press on.  Whittaker went on to win the fight and the interim title via decision.  After the fight he praised champion Michael Bisping, but Bisping didn’t have any of it.  The champion threw his belt at his potential challenger, and it appears as if the fight is set.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum took on former title contender Alistair Overeem. Overeem holds a win over Werdum dating back to their days with Strikeforce in 2011. Their original pairing came back in PRIDE in 2006.  Werdum won that fight via submission.  Tonight, Overeem would earn the win in the rubber match, taking two of three.  The result was a majority decision in favor of ‘The Reem.’

Also, former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis took on the winningest fighter in UFC lightweight history, Jim Miller.  The fight was fun to watch, a bloody mess as is most every Jim Miller fight.  The man has a ton of heart and brings it to the octagon each and every time.  Unfortunately for Miller, tonight was not his night, and he lost a unanimous decision to the former champ.

In one of the most back and forth heavyweight matches, Travis Browne was submitted by Oleksiy Oliynyk in the second round by neck crank.
