UFC 214 Results – Cormier vs. Jones 2, Woodley vs. Maia, Cyborg vs. Evinger

UFC 214 was headlined by a rematch between current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defending his belt against former champion Jon Jones.  The first time these two top 205-pounders fought was in January 2015 when Jones was the champion.  He was later stripped of the title after violating UFC code of conduct regulations.

The fight was a continuation from their first outing and it looked like things were going well for the champion in the first round as he landed the bigger shot, but the second round swayed in favor of Jones and then in the third the fight was called via KO as Jones regained his title.

After the fight Jones squashed the beef with Cormier, calling him a model champion and said he aspired to be like him.  Jones then proceeded to call out former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

The fight card was held from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and available for purchase on pay-per-view. Preliminary bouts tonight would not be on FS1 as usual, they will be on FXX, following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

The co-main event featured welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defending his strap against challenger and Jiu-Jitsu ace, Demian Maia.  The third title fight on the night will be for the vacant women’s featherweight title as Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino faces off against Tonya Evinger.

The record was set for the least amount of strikes thrown in a fight as Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia fought five rounds to a decision where Woodley would retain his title.  Lackluster fight but Woodley retains the belt.

Evinger moved up in weight to take on Cyborg, a task not many women are lining up to do.  While Evinger may have been on the receiving end of multiple strikes, she never backed down, and even earned a takedown or two at the end of the first round.  In the second round Evinger was more on the defensive mode as she waited for Cyborg to burn herself out.  She survived the round but then was dropped immediately in the third, only to survive that onslaught as well.  The fight continued and then moments later was dropped and Cyborg pounced in and the fight was called in the third round. Cyborg is the new UFC women’s featherweight champion.

Also, hard hitting former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler took on the ever-popular Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. This fight was everything we had hoped it would be.  The two 170-pounds stood and banged for 15 minutes with Lawler getting the unanimous decision and getting back in the win column.

Wow, what a win as Volkan Oezdemir defeated Jimi Manuwa via knockout just 22 seconds into the fight.

Ricardo Lamas put an end to the streak of the surging Jason Knight with a first round TKO.

Aljamain Sterling earned what was the biggest win of his career in a unanimous decision win over former bantamweight champion Renan Barao.

Brian Ortega remained undefeated at 12-0 with a third round submission win over Renato Moicano.

The first fight of the night paired Josh Burkman, who was on a three fight losing streak, up against Drew Dober. Dober pressed the fight up against the cage early and when the two squared up, Burkman was clipped with a perfectly timed left hook and dropped, resulting in a first round knockout loss and his fourth in a row.
