UFC Fight Night 106 results:  Belfort vs. Gastelum

Tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 fight card takes place in Fortaleza, Brazil and will be broadcast on FS1 beginning at 8pm EST for the preliminary bouts and 10pm EST for the main card.  Two fights will be streamed live via UFC Fight Pass beginning at 7pm EST.

In the main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort took on Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum in a middleweight matchup.  Belfort looked crisp, sharp, fast….. but Gastelum looked better.  He bloodied the former champ with a flurry of fists, and then once it got standing again, quickly floored him again with a shot.  Gastelum finishes the main event in the first round.

In the first fight of the night on UFC Fight Pass – Paulo Borrachinha defeated Garreth McLellan via TKO in just 1:17.  He moves to 9-0, keeping his undefeated record in tact.

Thanks for the Memories Josh Burkman….. or Not

After Michel Prazere made short work of long time mixed martial arts Veteran Josh Burkman, ‘The People’s Warrior’ laid his gloves in the center of the octagon and retired from the sport.  It wasn’t until a a little while later that commentator Todd Grisham stated that Burkman said backstage that he is not retired.  Burkman realizes that his UFC career is over but still wants to compete.

Blood Bath

During the Rani Yahya vs. Joe Soto fight, a massive cut opened up on the head of Soto after the two accidentally clashed, leaking and squirting blood all over the octagon.  The fight was temporarily halted by the referee for doctors to take a look but somehow the contest continued only for the blood to continue to flow.  What an incredible war.  Unbelievable that it was not stopped due to the cut.  The entire octagon and both fighters were drenched in blood.

New contender

Kevin Lee made some noise by submitting Brazilian, Francisco Trinaldo, via rear-naked choke.  Lee who was unranked in the lightweight division going into the contest may find himself in the top 15 on Monday.  He followed up the win by calling out Khabib Nurmagomedov who was supposed to fight at UFC 209 last weekend.

Rematch

A rematch between Alex Oliveira and Tim Means kicked off the main card on FS1.  The original meeting at UFC 207 ended in a no contest.  The controversy in the first fight came after an illegal knee from Means. Tonight in the rematch Oliveira finished the fight in front of his home country crowd and settled the score.

Draw and Upset

In a three round women’s bantamweight contest, Brazilian, Bethe Correia and Marion Reneau fought to a majority draw.  Correia won the first two rounds, and then Reneau was decisive in the third.  Then in the flyweight division, Ray Borg earned the biggest win of his career taking out number three ranked Jussier Formiga via decision.

Brutal Barboza

Edson Barboza and Beneil Dariush were putting on an incredible back and forth war before a knee by the Brazilian put down the Iranian.

Still Shogun

How about Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua putting on a war with Gian Villante, a rising prospect, and putting him out via TKO in the third and final round?  Each fighter had close calls throughout the contest but the former UFC light heavyweight champion put on a show and let everyone know he is still a threat.
