UFC on FOX 26 results – Lawler vs. Dos Anjos

UFC on FOX 26 takes place at the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The main card airs on FOX following preliminary bouts on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler met former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos at 170 pounds.  This fight was a display of talent between two top welterweights, but surprisingly it was the fighter who fought down at the lower weight that looked superior.  Dos Anjos used Muay Thai strikes in the clinch to get the better of Lawler.  There was a period of 24-seconds were Dos Anjoy reigned down strikes that went unanswered by Lawler.  Unfortunately Lawler would sustain a knee injury and could not put weight on the leg throughout the latter rounds.  Lawler, being one of the toughest competitors the octagon has ever seen, never gave up.

One fighter missed weight yesterday, and one did not weigh in at all.

Josh Emmett missed the featherweight limit of 146 pounds when he tipped the scales at 148.5 pounds for his co-main event fight against Ricardo Lamas.  But wow did Emmett put on a show, knocking out Lamas in the very first round, causing his head to bounce off the canvas, not once, not twice, but three times.

Also, Pietro Menga did not weigh in and his fight with Tim Elliott has been cancelled. Elliott did make weight for the fight but when was told that Penga was going to be five pounds over weight, Elliott declined the fight despite knowing he would have received 20 percent of his opponent’s purse.

Knockout artists Mike Perry and Santiago Ponzinibbio clashed to see whose stock rises in the welterweight division, while former UFC light heavyweight title contender Glover Teixeira took on the challenging Misha Cirkunov.

Perry and Ponzinibbio battered and bruised each other for 15 full minutes.  While some thought the fight was exciting, many did not believe it lived up to the hype.  In the end, Ponzinibbio won a unanimous decision and now has six straight wins at welterweight, the most of any contender.

It did not take long for Teixeira to look like a previous version of himself as his TKO’d Cirkunov in under three minutes.  Teixeira then walked over to UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and said a few words as if to set himself up for a potential title shot.

Julian Marquez defeated Darren Stewart in what could likely be fight of the night.  These two guys threw everything they had in their arsenal.  Marquez, who was signed to the UFC after defeating Phil Hawes on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series was receiving quite a bit of punishment at the hands of Stewart.  Everytime Stewart threw a right, it connected.  Marquez was taken down four times in the very first round, but he survived the onslought, only to deliver back with his own punishment.  In the second round, a failed takedown attempt by Stewart led to Marquez applying a choke, and the lifeless Stewart was forced to tap.

Nordine Taleb made quick work of Danny Roberts with a vicious knockout that Roberts protested, but will likely have to revisit his reaction once he watches the tape. See below.

Alessio Di Chirico defeated Oluwale Bamgbose with a massive knockout to kick things off on FS1.  Watch below.
