What is a Clubfoot?

Clubfoot (or talipes equinovarus) is a congenital birth defect that causes the one or both feet to turn inward and upward. The exact causes are unknown, but research indicates genetic factors may play a role.

Clubfoot results from abnormal development of the muscles, tendons and bones of the fetus. Shortened tendons and ligaments on the inside of the lower leg lead to the foot turning inward. A tight Achilles tendon contributes to the rigidity of the foot. It occurs in both feet about 50% of the time.

One of the most common birth defects, clubfoot occurs in approximately 1 out of 750 births, and has been documented for thousands of years. with some variation across countries and ethnic groups and an increased incidence in children born to a parent with clubfoot. It occurs more often in boys than girls. There are about 200,000 new cases of clubfoot each year around the world.

Why Does It Mean So Much To Kyle?

Kyle was born with a clubfoot himself. He was fortunate enough to have parents that corrected his Clubfoot, and followed through with the rigorous treatment required to allow him to live a fulfilling life. After having surgery shortly after entering this world, Kyle wore a cast to hold the position of his left foot. After having the cast on it was years of braces to help keep his feet straight and assist in learning to walk properly.

Because his mother and father made sure he received the proper treatment following surgery, he successfully participated in Football, Wrestling, and Lacrosse throughout high school. In addition to high school athletics, he wrestled on the collegiate level.

“I’ve decided to try and find a way to give back to the community, and after seeing numerous adults in my town with an uncorrected clubfoot, I realized how little people know about a clubfoot and this was my opportunity to inform others,” said Carroll.
