After withdrawing from UFC 255, Robbie Lawler looking to return in early 2021
Robbie Lawler’s injury was not as serious as originally thought.
The former UFC welterweight champion was expected to face Mike Perry on the UFC 255 main card, but Lawler was forced out of the fight due to injury. It was disappointing news for fans who were hoping to see Lawler back in action. However, it appears he will be able to return in early 2021 according to his management.
“His management tells me the injury isn’t serious, and he’s targeting a return around February, possibly even as early as January,” ESPN’s Brett Okamoto revealed.
Robbie Lawler is currently on a four-fight losing streak and has not looked like himself as of late. Last time out, he was dominated by Neil Magny and didn’t pull the trigger enough. Before that, he was dominated by Colby Covington for five rounds following a very controversial submission loss to Ben Askren. His last win came back in July of 2017 when he defeated Donald Cerrone.
Despite the losing streak, Lawler is still one of the best welterweights to ever compete. He defended the title twice in two absolute wars against Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit. Lawler also holds notable wins over Johny Hendricks, Matt Brown, Melvin Manhoef, and Josh Koscheck.
The former champion is still ranked 14th in the welterweight but desperately needs a win next time out. A fight against Perry made sense given “Platinum” is a big name but is outside of the rankings. So, perhaps if Perry wins on Saturday night the UFC will look to rebook that fight for early 2021.
Regardless, it is obviouly good that Robbie Lawler’s injury is not as serious as initially thought and he can return in early 2021. Who he will fight is uncertain but no matter who he fights, people will be tuning in to see “Ruthless” continue to fight.
