Alexander Volkanovski

Alexander Volkanovski batters & stops Chan Sung Jung at UFC 273

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, April 9, 2022, for UFC 273, going down live from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Headlining the event is a featherweight championship bout between Alexander Volkanovski and Chan Sung Jung, while the co-main event is contested in the bantamweight division, a rematch between UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and interim champion Petr Yan.

Reverting back to our main event, former champion Max Holloway was initially slated against Volkanovski for tonight, expecting to complete their trilogy.

However, Holloway was forced out with an injury, and he was replaced by no. 4 ranked Chan Sung Jung.

It’s too bad Josh Emmett wasn’t a consideration, considering he’s on an actual win streak. Not to mention he’s 37 years old and not getting any younger. Nonetheless, this is a stellar championship main event we have going down tonight!

Official Result: Alexander Volkanovski def. Chan Sung Jung via TKO (punches) at :45 of round four

This was a tough first round for Jung to say the least.

The champion wobbled him a number of times throughout the round, and is incredibly accurate tonight. It appears Jung wasn’t expecting this type of speed and accuracy, not to mention, Volkanovski is attacking him with a boxing gameplan, to our surprise.

Jung just seems to be two steps behind Volkanovski tonight. Volkanovski’s left hook, his jab, takedowns, everything he’s doing is working out perfecting for him. He continues to stun ‘The Korean Zombie’ throughout the round, it’s quite surprising he’s still in this fight. Jung is trying, but it’s just not working out for him through the first ten minutes.

Volkanovski begins to get his leg kicks going, forcing Jung off balance, but Jung is beginning to return with some punches of his own. The champion is able to evade the majority of them, but Jung gets a couple of them through.

The only problem is Volkanovski isn’t at all fazed by them.

Volkanovski hurts Jung badly at the end of the third and reigns down some vicious punches and elbows, but Jung is able to survive. The doctor was looking at Jung very closely following this rounds end, but Jung was given the go-ahead to continue.

Volkanovski lands a nasty combination early in the fourth and stuns Jung badly again, which is where Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight whilst Jung was still standing.

It was certainly a justifiable stoppage, Jung unfortunate for him, had nothing for the champion.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
