Alistair Overeem will “get back in the gym soon” following TKO loss to Alexander Volkov
UFC heavyweight legend Alistair Overeem says he’ll “get back in the gym soon” after suffering a TKO loss to Alexander Volkov at UFC Vegas 18.
Overeem told fans that he was making “one final run” to the UFC heavyweight title, and having won four of his last five fights, he was looking to make good on that promise. Unfortunately for Overeem, he had a poor performance against Volkov. Not only was Overeem outstruck on the feet, but he was unable to land the takedown and get the fight to the ground. That left him as a sitting duck for Volkov, who was accurate and powerful with his strikes en route to a second-round TKO victory. Overeem’s record in the Octagon dropped to 12-8 overall with the defeat.
The loss marked Overeem’s 15th knockout defeat in his MMA career, and it’s left some fans and media wondering if this is the end of “The Demolition Man.” Not so fast, says Overeem. The Dutchman took to social media the day after the fight, where he congratulated Volkov on a tremendous performance. While Overeem said he plans on healing up and taking time off to spend with family, he says he’ll be back in the gym soon, indicating that retirement is not on the table at the moment. Check out what Overeem wrote on his Twitter below.
You’re a true warrior @AlexDragoVolkov. Congrats on the win! Yesterday wasn’t my night. My highest priority right now is to heal up and spend some well deserved time with the family. I’ll be back in the gym soon though. Thank you all for your support! Really appreciate all of you pic.twitter.com/Tj70qjIMJA

At age 40, Overeem is very aware that he is in the final years of his fighting career, and every time he steps into the Octagon it could be the last time that we’ve seen the legend compete. Despite the loss to Volkov, Overeem’s fans are hoping that he walks one final time to the cage, and it feels like he will give them one more.
If Alistair Overeem fights again, who do you want to see him matched up against?
