Asher Frederick smashes way to win at Ohio Combat League 30
Asher Frederick continued his climb up the regional MMA rankings, as he smashed his way to a victory in the main event at Ohio Combat League 30 on Saturday night.
Frederick moved to 4-1 as he controlled his bout against Victor Guarriello for nearly the entire 15 minutes. “Shock N Rock” utilized plenty of body kicks early and often, and also used pinpoint punches to keep Guarriello at bay. Frederick also mixed in timely takedowns to throw off Guarriello, who was on the defensive for much of the bout.
Guarriello became more aggressive in the third round, staying strong until the finish as he tried to steal the victory. It was too little too late, though, as Frederick took home a 30-27 victory on all three judges’ scorecards.
In the co-main event, Quadarrius McGinnis used his grappling to bring home a victory as well. The Startan Fitness fighter made the best of his trip from Alabama to finish Dom Johns with a rear naked choke in the second round.
In the night’s opening pro bout, Mark Antonelli was successful in his pro debut. He put on a well-rounded 15-minute performance to take home the unanimous decision victory over Marcus Crawford. Crawford nearly stole the bout in the third round, as he locked in a triangle choke that Antonelli admitted was tight. Crawford was unable to finish the submission, however, and Antonelli was awarded the decision on all three judges’ scorecard.
Two Vision MMA fighters and former Mt. St. Joseph wrestlers highlighted the amateur portion of the card.
In the amateur main event, former Division III national champion wrestler Cornell Beachem Jr. topped Ethan Shirk to move to 2-0 on his career. Beachem landed a big slam in the first round, but from there he showed off his striking for the rest of the bout, bloodying Shirk and using both kicks and punches to take home a clear decision victory.
In another matchup of undefeated amateurs, Vernell Hawkins took home a split decision victory over Jade Batross. Most of the fight was spent striking, as the two fighters with wrestling backgrounds respected the ground game of their opponent.
