Brandon Royval booked to face Matt Schnell at UFC 274
Brandon Royval will get the chance to fight in front of a crowd for the first time.
On Thursday, Iridium Sports Agency, the management group that reps Royval, announced that the flyweight contender will face Matt Schnell at UFC 274 on May 7. Royval was teasing a fight announcement for a bit now as he confirmed on Thursday morning he officially signed the bout agreement.
Brandon Royval (13-6) is coming off a decision win over Rogerio Bontorin in January which snapped his two-fight losing streak. He suffered a submission loss to Alexandre Pantoja and a TKO injury loss to Brandon Moreno at UFC 255 in a fight he dislocated his shoulder in. The fourth-ranked flyweight made his UFC debut on short notice against Tim Elliott and beat him by submission, he then followed it up with a submission win over Kai Kara-France. Although he has five UFC fight under his belt, this will be the first time he fights in front of a crowd.
Matt Schnell (15-5 and one No Contest) is coming off a decision loss to Bontorin at UFC 262 in May of 2021 but was overturned to a No Contest due to Bontorin testing positive for a banned substance. The fight also took place at bantamweight and Bontorin missed weight. Schnell is currently ranked ninth at flyweight and has had four fights against Alex Perez canceled as Bontorin stepped up on short notice at UFC 262. Since then, three straight fights were canceled which has kept Schnell out of the Octagon for a year.
In his UFC tenure, Schnell is 5-3 and one No Contest in the UFC and holds notable wins over Tyson Nam, Louis Smolka, and Jordan Espinosa.
