Brunno Ferreira picks up first round knockout over Phil Hawes at UFC Vegas 84
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us for the first time in a month tonight, January 13, 2024, for UFC Vegas 84, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.
Headlining the event is a light-heavyweight rematch between no. 3 ranked Magomed Ankalaev (18-1-1) and no. 7 ranked Johnny Walker (21-7).
Co-headlining the event was also intended to be a rematch, that one coming in the flyweight division between no. 5 ranked Matheus Nicolau and no. 6 ranked Manel Kape (19-6). However, Kape weighed in at 129.5 lbs yesterday, 3.5 lbs over the flyweight non-title limit, thus scrapping the bout altogether.
As a result, the feature fight of the evening between Jim Miller (36-17) and Gabriel Benitez (23-10) was bumped up to the co-main event slot.
Our second bout going down on the main card tonight came in the middleweight division between dangerous finishers Phil Hawes (12-6) and Brunno Ferreira (11-1).
Hawes had gone 4-3 thus far into his promotional tenure, picking up two very impressive knockout victories in that time, though he was KO’d in all three defeats, most recently by 15-1 stud Ikram Aliskerov. Ferreira on the other hand, following a knockout win over Gregory Rodrigues in his UFC debut, was just knocked out by Nursulton Ruziboev in his latest appearance himself.

Official Result: Brunno Ferreira def. Phil Hawes via KO (punches) at 4:55 of round one
Ferreira opens up the bout with a high pace, just as we expected him to, while Hawes attempts to counter him coming in. He does land a good left hook onto Ferreira, though it didn’t faze the Brazilian who kept coming forward.
Hawes stuffs Ferreira’s first takedown attempt, though he wouldn’t stuff the second, spending around 90 seconds on his back before returning to his feet.
Ferreira lands a heavy knee that rocks Hawes, following up with heavy shots. He then lands a spinning back fist before eventually landing to a right hand, which led to a left hand that dropped Hawes. A couple follow up punches later and the fight was stopped with Ferreira picking up his 11th career victory, as well as his 8th via knockout.
