Cain Velasquez in jail after California shooting, no bail set – Story developing

Details as to what exactly happened are still developing but former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is currently being detained at the County of Santa Clara Department of Corrections facility without bail after a shooting in Morgan Hill, California.

NBC Bay Area, citing “sources with direct knowledge of the investigation,” first reported the news that Velasquez was jailed Monday after he was involved in a shooting that left one man injured. The shooting was reported at 3:14 p.m. local time, police said.

The San José Police Media Relations tweeted:

“Units are currently at the scene of a shooting near the intersection of Monterey Hwy and Bailey Ave.

“One adult male shot at least once transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“One suspect in custody. Unknown motive or circumstances.”

Update: Reports now state the former UFC champ is being held on an attempted murder charge and has a court date set for Wednesday at noon.

Update:  According to a report Tuesday from The San Jose Mercury-News, Velasquez’s booking for attempted murder came after he allegedly shot at a car of three individuals – one of whom had recently been accused of molesting a close relative of Velasquez’s.  The accused man is Harry Eugene Goularte, 43, who was arraigned Friday on one felony count of “a lewd and lascivious act with a child under the age of 14.” He was released despite objections from the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office.

UPDATE: In a criminal complaint acquired by MMA Junkie through the Santa Clara County Superior Court, Velasquez has been charged with attempted murder (one count), shooting at a motor vehicle or aircraft (one count), assault with a firearm (three counts), assault with a deadly weapon (three counts), willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle (one count), and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony (one count).

If found guilty of attempted murder, Velasquez faces a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison

Cain Velasquez is former two-time UFC heavyweight champion who left the sport with a record of 14-3. He holds notable wins over former champions Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos, among others. He last competed in MMA in February 2019 where he suffered a first round loss to current champion Francis Ngannou. Velasquez later began professional wrestling and spent some time with the WWE.
