Canelo is Back: Champ to return against John Ryder on May 6th
Canelo Alvarez is ubiquitous with the sport of boxing in the modern era. At 58-2-2, the Mexican superstar is back after defeating Gennadiy Golovkin last September and will make another defense of his IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO Super Middleweight titles against John Ryder on May 6th in Jalisco, Mexico.
Canelo vs. John Ryder: A Homecoming
John Ryder is no walkover for Canelo, although the Mexican king may make it look that way. Ryder is ranked third in Ring Magazine’s Super Middleweight rankings behind Caleb Plant, who Canelo already beat, and David Benavidez. Ryder is experienced with a 32-5 record with 18 coming by way of knockout. He is the current WBO Interim World Super Middleweight champ.
Ryder is on a four fight win streak after he was defeated by Callum Smith in 2019, another one of Canelo’s victims. In that streak, Ryder has beat Mike Guy, Jozef Jurko, Danny Jacobs, and Zach Parker.
Canelo recently saw his massive win streak snapped when he stepped up to light heavyweight to take on Dmitrii Bivol and lost via decision. It was Canelo’s first loss since his one sided loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013. He then bounced back with a one sided win over Gennadiy Golovkin with a decision in the trilogy of their rivalry. The list of names on Canelo’s resume is insanely long. Take a gander at this list of names that Canelo Alvarez has beat:
- Matthew Hatton, Shane Mosley, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Liam Smith, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennadiy Golovkin, Danny Jacobs, Sergey Kovalev, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant.
Canelo vs. Ryder isn’t the fight everyone thought we would get next. Many were asking for a rematch with Dmitrii Bivol, a match with Jermell Charlo, and the biggest was a Mexican showdown with David Benavidez.
Canelo always makes a big deal of Cinco de Mayo weekend and Ryder is the next on that list. This time, Canelo will go out to make a statement after a loss to Bivol and a lackluster performance against GGG in the trilogy match.
