Carlos Diego Ferreira starches Michael Johnson with vicious overhand right at UFC Vegas 73

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us today, May 20, 2023, for UFC Vegas 73, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a women’s strawweight encounter between no. 8 ranked BJJ sensation Mackenzie Dern (12-3) and no. 14 ranked kickboxer Angela Hill (15-12).

Co-headlining is a middleweight showdown between Edmen Shahbazyan (12-3) and Anthony Hernandez (10-2).

Opening up the main card tonight was a lightweight affair between Carlos Diego Ferreira (18-5) and Michael Johnson (21-19).

Following a six-fight win streak from 2016 to 2020, Ferreira has since dropped his last three-straight. Johnson on the other hand went 0-4 from 2019 to 2021, before going 2-1 last year in 2022, the only defeat coming via a very controversial split decision.

Official Result: Carlos Diego Ferreira def. Michael Johnson via KO (punch) at 1:50 of round two

Ferreira attempts to get inside Johnson’s range with his kicks early on, before switching to his punches as the opening round progresses. Unfortunate for him, every time he goes in for an exchange, he gets clipped with a combination, one of which wobbles him toward the end of round one.

Johnson looked great through the first five minutes, stuffing Ferreira’s only takedown attempt with ease and busting him up on the feet, also with ease.

Ferreira finds his range in the second however and KO’s Johnson on the spot with a perfectly timed and placed overhand right; it looked exactly like when Josh Emmett knocked Johnson out a few years back, as you can see below.

After a great start for Michael Johnson, Carlos Diego Ferreira is able to stop him in round two, snapping his three-fight losing skid at UFC Vegas 73.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
