CM Punk to get another shot in UFC, likely this year
After a lopsided loss to youngster Mickey Gall at UFC 203, it was questioned whether former WWE superstar CM Punk would ever return to the octagon.
Despite his inexperience and absence from mixed martial arts competition since September 2016, Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, will get another shot with the UFC according to UFC President Dana White.
Following this past weekend’s UFC 220 pay-per-view White spoke with the Associated Press where he addressed the topic.
“I like that guy. He’s a good dude,” White said. “He wants one more. He wants to get another shot. I’m going to give it to him.”
White said he has no date or opponent in mind for Punk, “but I’m working on it.”
“He’s a completely different case than most normal human beings, so I’m going to give him another shot,” White said.
Punk, a former WWE champion, jumped straight into the UFC scene without as much as an amateur or pro bout outside the organization. He was submitted by Gall at 2:14 in the very first round.
Since the loss, the 39-year old Brooks has continued to train at Roufusport and has been adamant about returning to competition to try and prove his worth.
Brooks was promoted to BJJ blue belt by Daniel Wanderley in December.
