Colby Covington looking for raise and new UFC contract, says coach
UFC welterweight Colby Covington is looking for a raise and a new UFC contract, says his coach at MMA Masters, Daniel Valverde.
Covington is coming off of a dominant decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. However, despite headlining the pay-per-view card, Covington actually made less money than Masvidal did despite Covington being a higher-ranked fighter. One of the reasons for that is Covington did not receive pay-per-view points as a bonus, but Masvidal’s base salary for the fight was reportedly still higher than Covington’s.
Covington is the No. 1 contender in the UFC welterweight division, and UFC president Dana White says he will likely take on top prospect Khamzat Chimaev in his next fight, headlining a UFC on ABC card. That won’t be on pay-per-view either, so PPV points won’t be involved. Even still, Covington desires a raise, and according to his coach at MMA Masters, he’s going to ask the UFC for more money.
“(Covington) did well, but Masvidal made more than he did. Now Colby is renewing his contract with the UFC, so we believe that the UFC will give him a good (salary) raise. He has a number in his head and he doesn’t think he deserves to earn less than Masvidal. Technically he’s a better guy than Masvidal. In terms of sales too, despite the fact that Masvidal sells a lot. So he thinks he deserves to make more or at the same level as Masvidal,” said Valverde, Covington’s coach at MMA Masters, in an interview with AG Fight.
“He has a great relationship with Dana, with the UFC, so he only speaks well of the company. He doesn’t want to leave the UFC, that’s not an option. He’s happy there, he wants to be champion and he’s going to chase the wins to fight for the belt. He’s a very determined guy and he won’t stop until he achieves his goal.”
Do you think Colby Covington will get a raise and the new contract from the UFC that he desires before he fights Khamzat Chimaev?
